Be Prepared

Thanks to the colorful cinder cones and trails that crunch underfoot, anyone who hikes across Haleakala Crater will swear they could be on the moon. Covering a total of 19 square miles, the crater basin is a vast wilderness with 30 miles of trails. It’s a place of adventure, mythology, and silence—and home to Maui’s best hiking. If you love the outdoors, no trip to Maui is complete without a spending a day on the crater floor. But be prepared. It was near freezing when we set out, and sweltering when we got back to the top. Dress in layers and bring a daypack. We hiked from 10,000 to 7,000 ft and back. The trip back up took twice as long as the trip down. I'm glad we took this easy hike. I wanted to hike the longer trails, but we learned we're going to have to acclimate to the high altitudes with practice over time. IT'S LIKE BEING ON THE MOON!
